From a Dirt Road
to the Boardroom

I grew up on a dirt road in Conway, South Carolina, where life moved slower — we waited for water to boil, waited for night to cool the air, waited our turn. My daddy let me drive his truck on that road when I was eight, but he'd never let me shift out of first gear. I always wanted to know what it felt like to drive the Autobahn — the German highway with no speed limit at all. It took me forty years to understand he was teaching me something.
Richard Causey
One moment that changed everything
Richard grew up where life moved more slowly and leadership lessons came from everyday experiences, hard work, and people who valued character above titles. Those years shaped how he thinks about responsibility, resilience, faith, and service.
After decades in banking and executive leadership, he realized that success alone was not enough. He watched a longtime colleague retire with a few kind words, a couple of hugs, and a flat-screen TV — and saw that he had been riding the bus instead of deciding where it was headed. At 52, he left to, in his own words, “jump and grow my wings on the way down.”

What he does now
Today Richard is Principal and Master Coach at DRC Consulting and a certified Maxwell Leadership Speaker, Coach, and Teacher — a credential that puts his coaching methodology inside a recognized, respected system built by John Maxwell, one of the leadership authors Richard's own work is most often compared to. He has delivered more than 4,000 sessions — the same experience he now brings to keynotes and executive coaching engagements. In Dirt Road Leadership, he distilled four decades of that experience into stories any leader can use.
His mission is to influence people for good: to help them gain perspective, grow through reflection, and lead with greater intentionality. Everything he teaches follows the four stages of the Dirt Road framework.
